Have some questions prior to purchase

deuce02 Mar 19, 2004 12:55 PM

IM really thinking of purchasing some crested's and or other geckos. I would like more info on the care of these guys. I just had a custom enclosure made for my veiled chameleons and I landed up having 2 more cages added to the base under the other enclosure. Well ea. side will have a nice area of 24x22x28. here are my questions

1) I read that they don't require a heat source as long as the room stays above 65? Do they need any kind of UV light? I will have a florescent fixture in ea. cage either way, just need to know if I need something like some reptisun bulbs as well.

2) What are their eating habits like? Crickets I would guess, what else could they eat?

3) Do they need a water dish and or misting? What's the humidity need to be around?

4) Can more then one be housed in the same enclosure? Since IM looking at such a large one, can more then one be housed together?

5) Anyone have any pics of enclosures so i can get some ideas on how a nice set up would be like.

6) Anyone know of any good breeders?

Any other info you can think of that would help in my search.

thanks for your time
Patrick

Hi!

I can help you out with some of them.

1.) They do not require additional heat as long as its about 70-75 degrees. Anything above 82 could seriously harm them.

2.) Yep, they love their crickets! They also like to eat fruit baby foods, and "Crested gecko diet" is a powdered diet staple you add water to and can get at pet stores that mine really loves too. When i first got him (about a month old) i just fed him entirely crickets,as many as he wanted, each day, now he is at about 7 months old and he gets crested gecko diet every night and crickets every few days.

3.) Yep, you should give em a small water dish, but they mainly drink droplets off their face and off the sides of the glass and decor, etc. So misting them down one or two times a day is a must, since they do need higher humidity. Pretty sure you want it to get 70-80%, but not constantly. a couple mistings a day is good.

4.) Yep, more than one can be housed together as long as they are the same size. I have heard you can also keep two males together as long as they are brought up together and you have enough room, but i am not 100% sure.

5.) I do have a pic of my enclosure, but its just a ten gallon tank. Just click the link below and scroll down to the bottom!

6.) I see you adopted a reptile from the mid michigan reptile rescue. are you from michigan? if so, there is a show in lansing tomorrow (3-20) where this one guy, (i wish i knew his name, i talk to him all the time at shows! lol) always has a table full of real nice cresteds. He also attends most of the taylor shows as well. You will know when you see him, he always has a nice little display cabinet with tons of deli cups with cresteds on it, on blue aquarium gravel. although he is not who i got my crested from.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

My crested gecko! =)

Hey,
thanks for the info. Yes, IM from Michigan. Ann arbor to be exact. Unfortunately I will not be able to go to the show in Lansing is it?? I went to the past to in Taylor and prolly seen the guy your talking about. I saw some at the past one and decided to look more into them. Since they don't require excess heat, it makes them nearly perfect for my enclosure. You said you weren't too sure about 2 males huh? How about more then one female?
Thanks again for the info. Maybe ill catch you at the next Taylor show.

Hi,
You're welcome I was actually wrong about the lansing show, its the 21st, not the 20th. I live in lansing so its just a short drive there for me. But anyways, I know that two females can be kept together fine. and if you keep male and female though, be prepared for eggs. Well, good luck! I will probably be at the next taylor one as well (didnt go to the last couple). Hope you find yourself some good cresteds!

Oh, by the way there's a pretty good caresheet on http://www.gexfiles.com/ for cresteds, if you wanted to go check that out.

Do a google search on crested geckos or rhacodactylus. Also read all the past posts on this forum. All your questions have been answered many times in many places.

Gee
Thanks soooo much for your help. I tried looking at prior posts and using the search option leaves little to be desired. Sorry I don't have countless amounts of hours to search old posts. I asked if someone could just point me in the right direction, that's all. If you dont want to help don't bother posting.
thanks

I only said anything because it is hard to get replies on this post about the questions you asked. There was one user who replied with some good info on these guys, but I would assume you would want multiple sources so you could duduce the best information. Most of the people who have the most experience will not even open up a post like yours because they have already answered these questions dozens of times. It doesn't take countless hours to research a herp. Maybe 30 minutes to do a google search and download about 5 care sheets which may then take an hour or so to read. Not trying to break your ba#$s man, just trying to save you some frustration so you don't wait around for the answers to all your questions.

Sorry to jump on your case, ive just had some rude people in the past who's answer to everything is look it up or search the forum. They dont see the point of posting a question? Ive tried searching this forum a ton of times and the search option is terrible in my opinion. Never comes up with what i want or need.
thanks

I have a link to Allen Repashy's website. He wrote an article on cresteds for Reptiles magazine, and alot of people consider it the best care sheet out there for these guys. Click the link for my web page below then go to the links part and you'll find the link to Sand Fire Dragon Ranch, the article is in there.
