Cage Modifications / Need some advice

jacksonsrule Mar 19, 2004 01:30 PM

Right now I have my male Jackson's in an 2'x2.5'x4' - 1/2" wire cage.
There are two problems I want to resolve:

1) I need to get humidity levels higher (right now 55% is all I can get with two big live plants and frequent spraying)

and

2) I want to discourage my Cham from spending so much time on the bars.

So, I want to put "walls" up on three sides of the cage.

What I was thinking was, to cut plywood sheets to size for the three sides, and cover them in that indoor/outdoor green plastic carpet stuff. This leaves the front and top still completely open. I figure it may be easier for me to free-range feed now, since the crix could climb up the walls and be more contained. I currently cup-feed.

I really don't think ingestion of the green-grass carpet particles would be a problem. The stuff I'm thinking about from the 'Depot has very fine "thread" and does not come off easily.

Do any of you cage-masters have any reasons why this would not be a good idea, or have any better ideas?

thanks.

There is some open plastic mesh in the garden departments I think that is used to keep birds etc. off fruit trees and shrubs. You could hang panels of it inside the cage with cable ties or wire to give climbing area off screen. As for keeping a large cage more humid I often hang clear shower curtains or clear plastic sheeting on the back and/or sides of my cages. Really helps! Also protects walls and furniture from overspray.

1)Why do you want to keep him off the sides? If it was screening that could hurt his toes I'd understand but with wore mesh, what's the problem?
2)I've used plastic tarps from any hardware store around 3 sides but I no longer do that. I just keep a room humdifier going about 18 hours/day. FWIW, I think 55% humidity if fine.
3)Cage carpeting is OK but I find that it's easier to use either nothing or paper towels. The cage carpetting needs to be washed frequently.
