Cave rats...

Tigergenesis Mar 19, 2004 01:45 PM

I think I've fallen in love with these guys. They are gorgeous. I was wondering if a 48x24x12 cage would suffice for one of these guys?

Any info/input is appreciated.

I have four adult cave rats, and they are all kept individually in cages that are 36x24x12. It seems to be plenty of space. Except during breeding season, or when the weather gets too warm, they spend much of their times in their hideboxes anyway.

Enjoy! They are a beautiful species!

Thanks, good to know I'm on the right track.

Perhaps you might be willing to answer a couple more questions for me?

Are they good feeders - especially when it comes to F/T prey? Do they appreciate any kind of climbing structures or do they pretty much stay on the ground? I'm also trying to imagine what to use as a hide for a large adult?

Thank you!

Definitely good feeders. None of my four have ever refused thawed food. Even the hatchlings are pretty easy to switch from live to thawed, if they don't take thawed right off the bat. Youngsters can be shy feeders, so I typically give them food then leave the room. My adults don't seem to mind if I'm in the room though.

I have never provided mine with any climbing structures, so I don't know if they'd use them or not. However, they never perch on top of their caves, so I'd be inclined to think that they are primarily ground dwellers. As for caves, you can pretty much use anything that is easy to clean. Rubbermaid containers with a hole cut in the top, upside down cat litter pans with a hole in the side... You can even find large "reptile caves" at pet stores, but you'll pay a premium.
