tank size..

kcaiman Mar 19, 2004 04:45 PM

i've been wanting a snake for a long time now and have been researching all kinds and think a BRB might be the one. i have a 29gal long tank and was wondering how long a BRB would be comfortable in it. i'm just all little worried about it being a foot deep. i've never had a snake but many other herps. is this a good size tank to start it in and about what size will it need as an adult?

Also, i was wondering about feeding snakes... i'm used to the mice for a monitor but do you just need to use tweezers and "play" with the snake and move the mouse around? Sorry for the stupid question i just haven't done it before.

thanks for the help!

The tank should be fine until the snake is between 3'-4' (Around 1.5 yrs old)

Most snakes need no help feeding once they are established. Feed them outside of the enclosure. It really shouldn't be a problem to feed. Ask the seller what he has the snake on and just follow the routine.

Good luck...

kcaiman,
. Your question is a good one but I think you need to be thinking about a lot more than just cage size. How are you going to keep the humidity up in that tank? If it has a screen top all of the humidity will rapidly escape. What are you going to use to heat it and how are you going to control the heat to maintain a good temperature gradient in the tank? Tanks are made of glass and BRBs are secretive and nocturnal. What are you going to do to provide hiding places in the tank?
. If the snake is already eating dead prey when you get it it will probably not require any wiggling to get it to eat. Little BRBs will usually eat a good smelling warm dead mouse if you just put it into a container with the snake and leave it alone.

I keep dart frogs and they require just aas much if not more humidity and a nice warm cage. Although the BRB's like it a bit warmer but that should be no problem. I have these hoods that have a space for a flourescent and also a space to put heat three bulbs. Good to put night bulbs and basking bulbs i'll just have to find a way to screen them off so the snake cant get near them. thanks for the response!

kcaiman,
. BRBs are very nocturnal. Many of us do not use any lights in or near our BRB cages. You may want to read the post down below on the subject. I know I am sounding like I am on your case but it seems like you are expecting that asking a few questions here will tell you everything you need to know about keeping BRBs. Have you found and read websites with info on BRBs?
Good Luck,
Jeff
