Do snakes "mock" mate?

Leeann Mar 19, 2004 04:58 PM

I have 2 male (supposedly) western hognoses and for the past 3 days it looks like they are going through an intense mating ritual. Do snakes "mock" mate or are they probably sexed wrong? The smaller one (maybe he is the only male) wont leave the other alone. He stays in constant contact with the other, twitching and nudging and entwining his tail around the others tail. It is very entertaining behavior to watch!

It could be they are sexed incorrectly or possibly they are two males and it is a form of combat.

Hi there:

That doesn't sound like combat to me. Sure, they may be sexed wrong, but they may both be males as well. Sometimes males try to mate with other males. I have never heard of mock mating. Some snakes even attempt to mate with inanimate objects. It's all happened!
