Weird weight situation

Holmgren Mar 19, 2004 05:10 PM

Well, I have two crested. My female is almost 9 months old and my male's age is undetermined(but he's a little bigger than the female). I thinking that my female may be gravid, but not enough to notice any eggs. Anyway, I was just double checking some of the requirements for breeding. Both crested geckos are old enough, and I have also heard that they should be a certain weight(30-40 grams). Well I used a weighing device but it only weighs in lbs. and oz. My female weighed in at .6 oz. and my male was .7 oz. which would end up being little more then 15 grams. Wouldn't that be considered underweight? I know my crested geckos are a healthy weight and are about 7" long. What's going on? Is is the weighing device?

P.S. I'm not a newb or anything, I've had mine for awhile now, I just haven't bred crested geckos before.

Regardless of the weight of your female at the moment she is too young to breed! I bred mine at twelve months (over three years ago when very little literature was avilable) and that was too young as all of my females got calcium deficiency very quickly. The reason for this is that they are still growing at this age and are trying to use their calcium for their bones, if they lay eggs all of their bcalcium is used on the eggs instead causing metabolic bone disease! I personally don't breed mine now until they are at least 14 months and definately stopped growing.
