I just recently switched to a halogen bulb for heat. I just got a Sylvania 75 watt 30* spread long life, since that was what was available. I tried a 50 watt first, but it wasn't enough for my cage - it might be fine in yours. (Mine is a glass 80 gal aquarium with screen top and seed substrate - basking spot is about 135* at 15" away). Because they burn hotter than regular incandescents, I would for sure use a porcelain socket.
