Will my iguana grow his spines back?

seabass Mar 19, 2004 06:17 PM

Just started reading this forum, it's great with lots of good info.

I just "inherited" my iguana from a cousin who couldnt care for it anymore. It's a male about 1.5 years old i think.

My question is this: When i recieved him some of his spines were missing along his back and he seemed too skinny. I have a new 6 foot custom built enclosure for him, ceramic heat emitter, UVB bulbs, the works. He's doing great now and loves to be held, he even rubs his dewlap on my hair when i hold him on my shoulder and licks my ear. He has gained some weight but will his spines ever fully grow back? The ones near his head are more erect now and look very strong but he is still missing about 10 along his lower back. Has anybody ever had any luck in having them grow back in?

Tempest has a couple of broken spines, they are growing but they are no where near as long as the rest of his spines. One of them is broken at about 1/3 of the length, its still an odd shape and as short relative to the rest of his spines, but it does grow. I'm hoping one day, its the same as all the rest tho!

My TREX lost a few spikes in fights with my alpha male Godzilla and some grew up again and others didnt. Its easy to recognize the spikes that will probably grow up again from those that will never (probably) grow up again.Well, at least that was what happened to my TREX!Looking at his skin (where the missing spikes were located) i saw 2 different situations:In one place both borders of the skin glued completely as he never have had a spike in that place before. In that place the spikes didnt grow up again. In another place both borders of the skin didnt glue completely. You could still see a little bit of flesh, like the root of the spike that was pulled out.In that place a new spike grew up again , but it took several months, more than one year.

On that photo you can see the new baby spike growing up on his back line and the missing spike that i think ll never grow up again on the base of his tail
