Nigerian Uro's

shasha369 Mar 19, 2004 07:02 PM

Hi everyone, I am a Beardie owner who is looking to accquire a pair of uro's where can I read up on their care and husbandry. I Know a little since I know someone who has a group of 5 but he is a begonner and can not educate me on this subject as much as I would like to be, before I start. Thanx in advance for all info because once I start I will be a pest so that my Uro's get the best care I can give them. I strongly believe in knowing what I am doing before I experiment with a Lizzard's Life.

My best advice to give you is to by captive bred, or very long term wc from a reputable breeder. Stay away from the newly imported wc saharan, even though they are beautiful and inexpensive. They have a high mortality rate. Check out deerfern farms, the kingsnake care sheets, Melissa Kaplan, Mark Walsh, Audrey Vanderlindens uro article from Reptiles magazines and read books. If you look further down in the archives I gave another person a whole list of books and articles to read. Uros are fantastic pets! Research thoroughly and buy like I suggested and you will be rewarded with a marvelous animal.

Already printed out the list you mentioned down on the list. Also do you know what size is correct for breeding? The beginner that I mentioned said he wanted to breed the ones he has and I think one of the females might be to small but the others look adult size to me, but I am just judging from Beardies not Uro's.?

Adult size is 11-14 stl and weighing 200 grams. If bred too young, you can have problems with egg binding. Since the vast majority of these are imports, I would also want to be sure they were well acclimated, healthy and with a good diet which includes calcium for egg production.
