Zoo-Med Bulb dead, but Halogen produces way less heat.

smallFry Mar 19, 2004 09:27 PM

The Zoo-Med basking lamp only lasted a month.

I put in a 45W Halogen lamp and the temps are easily 7-10 degrees COOLER.

I thought everyone said that halogen floods make more heat?

they do the 45 watt heats like a 100 watt basking bulb, and the 90 watt halogen flood light heats up like a 150 watt zoo med basking bulb i use them i know , trust me there way better and only cost like 4-5 dollars and last forever, and i alwyas use the uvb 'uva flourescent light too

He's not using the same wattage bulb.He didn't say what wattage his Zoo-med is, but it definately isn't only 45 watts like the halogen he's using.

The zoo-med was 150W. When I replaced it with a 45W Halogen flood lamp, the air temps went from 94-95F down to around 83F.

When the temps dropped I had 2 lights: a 45W halogen and one 90w halogen. Perhaps if I used 2 90w halogens the temperature would go back up. Once this zoo-med dies I'll give that a whirl.

FYI: Raising the basking spot is NOT an option here. I'm talking about AIR temps, not basking.
