WATER BOWLS IN SNAKE RACKS>>>>>>what do you guys use??? our snakes make such a mess.

cv768 Mar 20, 2004 01:37 AM

Some the snakes are on wood shavings, and they pile the shavings into the water. The ones on paper towel push the bowl around the rubbermaid and spill it or push it to the hot end where it evaporates quick.

Any tip???

Or just get some heavy duty water bowls?

Think big dog bowls would work?

I had the same problem with snakes pushing the bowls around and tipping them. So I bought the heavy plastic dog bowls from Wal-Mart. They are a couple of dollars apiece and work really well.
They come in different sizes, so they work well with all sizes of snakes!! My adults use the large size, which are 7 or 8" in diameter. Once filled with water, they dont tip over. They still get alittle substrate in them, but no big deal, just dump it out and replace with fresh water. They clean up real easy too, we have hard water so over time there is calcium build up on the bowls, and a pain to get off. If you have city water, it shouldnt be a problem. About the best thing I have found.

thanks...and yes we are in the country with our calcium build up too. I hate getting that stuff off! The dishwasher sometimes can get it off ok...but not great.

i've found some bowls that work nicely, there made by petmate (petmate.com)and are called designer bowls.the jumbo size is 11" wide at the bottom and 3.5" high.when filled half way up there perfect for soaking (my nearly 5' hondo fits nicely, oops i mean corn).i find a few pieces of aspen in the bowls but never a lot.they have never been tipped over.the best reason i like them is that they make a perfect hide.i take my soldering pen and melt an approx. 2"x2" hole in the side and again my 5'snake fits neatly inside.by melting in the hole it has smooth finish, any sharp points can be trimmed with a toe nail clipper.i've found this size bowl at a local discounter for $1.59 each.of coarse they make different sizes that work well for different applications.hope this helps.
