I have a quick question about mealworms

fadetolemons Mar 20, 2004 10:37 AM

A friend told me that if I want to breed them, I should just throw a piece of lettuce in the container they're in and they will multiply. Is this right? I believed that they would need to develop into beetles and then mate, and then they would have offspring, and it required a lot more space and supply than a small piece of lettuce..

Alright, here is the skinny on breeding mealies.

First off, you can use lettuce, but it molds, rots and gets really smelly. Use baby carrots. They won't mold or rot. Basically the lettuce or carrots is just a water source for the mealworms. After a week or two the mealworms will pupate into "aliens", at which time you remove the aliens into another seperate container. After another week or so the aliens will hatch into beetles. Remove the beetles into a third container with a nice gutloading mixture, and some carrots. Leave them there for about 3 weeks. Then move the beetles into a fourth container (or the original one if all of your mealies have pupated)... and repeat the process. Basically you can have as few, or as many containers as you want, with mealworms of various sizes. The important thing to remember is to move the pupae from the mealie container as they will eat them...

Hope some of this helps.
