Getting another tortoise

Becki71 Mar 20, 2004 11:18 AM

Hi! I have a baby Herman that we have had about a month or so now and we are now waiting anxiously for another new arrival on Tuesday morning. We are so excited! Everyone warned me that they would be addictive and couldn't just stop at one. . Anyway....I had a question about keeping two in the same pen. They are about the same age...3 months old. I know I am supposed to keep them apart to make sure the new one is free from disease. How long should I keep them apart? And once I put them together should I expect any problems? Since they are so young I doubt I have to worry about fighting or anything right? Just looking for any advice you may have. Thanks!

You should quarantine the new arrival for at least 30-60 days.
Ideally it would be 6 months but I don't realistically expect
a lot of people to do that. When you introduce the new animal
to a pen that already has an occupant, maybe you could make a
few changes. You'll probably need to add some more hiding areas
and maybe some new branches or stones, so that the pen seems new
to the old inhabitant also, and he won't feel so much like there's
an intruder in his favorite spots.

Wow! That is a lot longer than I would have thought to keep them apart. Thanks for the advice!

I was in the same situation as you are talking about. My first Hermann's was around a year old and once I had my newest one for over 6 months, I put them in the same habitat. They were both still babies. I thought they were fine together but the older one bit the tail off the younger one. Poor thing. I didn't see it right away and it healed fine but I feel so guilty. I also caught the older one ramming the younger one. So I would say, be careful and keep a close eye on them. I have all of mine in separate habitats now. I never thought that would happen.

Wow! That is so scary!!! I hope mine don't do that. They are both just little hatchlings though...so I'm hoping they are to young to worry about fighting. Plus they will be the same age. Thanks for the info! I will keep a sharp eye out.
