Some questions about Ezra, my Schneider's skink...

lcgeckos Mar 20, 2004 01:46 PM

Okay, after much research, I have set up Ezra's tank to the best of my care sheet ability. He has a substrate that he can dig in, a basking spot that reaches 127 degrees in the middle of the day and alot of stuff to lay, hide, climb and do. I put crickets into his tank, which I find dead usually 3-4 days later. He doesn't seem to be eating any, and I can't recall that he's eaten since I've had him (which is about a month now). I put water in his bowl twice a week, but its usually filled with sand by the next morning. I'm starting to worry now that he's not very happy. He stays buried in the sand, doesn't eat, or come out... what is wrong?

Agreed- it sounds like there is something wrong with either your skink or your set-up. Aino's page can help you determine if you have a husbandry problem.
Have you tried other food items besides crickets? Have you had to clean up feces yet? If there is no poop, then agreed- your animal is probably not eating. A month is too long to not eat- you need to solve this problem now, or you will lose your pet. Do you know whether this is a wild caught animal? Has is EVER eaten in captivity?
Have you had your skink checked for GI parastites? If not you do usually need a fresh feces sample- if your pet is not producing, some vets might attempt a cloacal wash and exam of the material for parasites, or just give a dewormer if the animal is suspected to be wild-caught.
good luck, and check out Aino's site! Jess b

Where did you learn that a 130F basking spot was needed? That sounds excessive, even for a desert dwelling animal. If you are using that kind of heat in anything less than a 75g tank, the skink may be too hot.
