question about possible RI

patoquack Mar 20, 2004 01:49 PM

I have an 01 female Ronne Pastel that appears be 100% healthy except for one possible problem. I took her outside today since the weather is warming up nicely and after having her out for about 20 minutes of exercise I noticed I could hear her breathing.. but I couldn't see any liquid in her nostrils. I've had her temps well monitored and it never falls below maybe 79 for the night low and stays at about 82 to 84 during the day (plus she has her warm spot that I keep at 90 - 95. could the breathing noise suggest a slight RI?? or do adult boas just make some noise when they breathe? she is about 6 ft and 12 lbs. I've only been keeping boas for just over a year now and she is the largest boa I have ever even been near so I don't have a lot of experience yet. So, this is just a "breathing noise" and no sign of any fluid in her nostrils and no open mouth breathing..

I would greatly appreciate any assistance here..
Patrick

Hi, I am probably of no help but I have heard of this once before, but that stituation had the snake exposed to a family member that would actually smoke in the same room as the snake. This is probably not the case as you sound to take great care of her. Maybe it can be some type of air passage irritation. Just a thought.

breathing. From what you wrote, her temps seem fine. I'll bet when you took her outside, she probably got a little excited, her heartrate and breathing increased....and you heard her breathing. I can hear my larger ones breathing sometimes when I take them out......especially out in the big wide world!!! They perk up and take big deep breaths and you can hear that air swushing in and out

Thanks for both of the responses to my post..

Linda, I have a funny suspicion you have some experience with boas, so your response was greatly reassuring. ..I'll put the Tylan back in the fridge..

I'm going to try breeding her this fall, so I should have lots more questions coming up on the forum as I learn about that whole process..

thanks again,

I'm just relating what mine do when they go outside. It's very exciting stuff!! I love to watch them outside. Mine go shoulder riding out to feed the horses with me, water plants, roll the garbage can waaaay down to the road, feed the jackrabbits, etc. I can often hear them take big deep breaths outside and can only attribute it to excitement.

You can always keep an eye out for any RI symptoms and then treat accordingly.

Linda, you really seem to enjoy your snakes.. and life in general.
your writing reminds me a little of Annie Dillard.

I will definitely keep a close eye out for any signs of RI. I did put my boas through a short brumation this past winter just to see how I would do it. I wanted to get a feel for lowering the temps and keeping them healthy during the process.. so far everyone in my snakeroom seems to be healthy...

Do you remember the show "Mork and Mindy"? Mork used to call people "Nimnals" sometimes. I don't know what it means either, but the word has stuck with me......lo, these many years

I use to watch that show religiously. I love it!
