How to pop a baby?

demiturtle Mar 20, 2004 02:53 PM

I was just wondering how you pop a baby corn snake. I really want to get them sexed, but i can find no one in my area that knows how to probe a snake. I know that popping isn't 100% accurate, but it is better than not knowing. Thanks.

you should not try it alone. If you aren't careful, you could damage your snake.

How to pop...hold the snake with two hands, putting a thumb on either side of the vent, give the tail a slight bend or twist, then roll the thumb, on the tail side, toward the vent. A *gentle* roll should push the hemipenes up. If it doesn't, change your position slightly...do NOT press harder. The hemipenes look like snail entennae. LOL!

I don't know where you are but you might be able to find a vet that can show you how this is done.

I have looked for a vet who knows how, but I have had no luck. I called every office, and not to many people are into herptiles in this part of Ohio.

Well...I told you how it's done. Just be VERY careful please. If you hurt your snake because of something I said, I'd have a hard time forgiving myself.

By the way, it is 100% accurate, if done right. The only time it's not is when the pressure isn't applied correctly and the snake is missexed as female.

I prefer probing though. It is easier to me than popping and therefore, there is less room for error.

You do know that corn snakes can be sexed just by looking at their shape right? It's harder to do with young ones though. How old are your snakes? Can you post a picture?
