Are these chameleon books good?

lilroach56 Mar 20, 2004 05:10 PM

I ordered "Chameleons: Everything About Selection, Care, Nutrition, Diseases, Breeding, & Behavior" and "Jackson's Chameleons and Veiled Chameleons Richard D. Bartlett,Patricia Pope Bartlett". Are those good choices for books on chameleons?

I don't care for the Bartlett et al book. A lot of the infoi is dated. Who's the author of the other one?

i am pretty sure both are bartlett books.

A critical detail is the date. Cham husbandry knowledge has grown exponentially over the past 15-20 years so anything older than 1999 should be suspect.

I got those as well and a couple others. The only one I usually reference (though I get most of my cham education online b/c it is more current) is Linda Davison's book Chameleons: Their Care and Breeding.

She and her husband are the creator's of Miner-all www.miner-all.net/

It was written in 1997 but is pretty comprehensive. Ed's comment about outdated info is a good one so if it is regrading health issues you should always cross reference to current info.

the general chameleon one is 1995 and the jackson and veiled one is 2001. Is that ok?

I don't much care for the '95 Bartlett book. I've not seen the newer one. Linda Davison's is OK but there are things in it I'm not crazy about, especially the parts where they tell you how to play veterinarian. Depending on what kind of cham you have there are some excellent web sites out there (and some really bad ones. For jax, David Pickering & Steve O'meara both have great sites. And, of course, there are more general sites such as www.adcham.com and www.chameleonjournals.com.
