Hygrometer positioning in tanks.....

MightyPython Mar 20, 2004 05:16 PM

I know that you have to have about 3 thermometers in your tank (One in the middle and one for cool side and warm side). What about hygrometers? Is just one in the middle of the tank good enough or is it a must to put a few in there as well? I have a digital thermometer that also measures humidity in the middle and it's at 66%. Should I put one on the warm side under the lamp as well? Might it be a lot drier on that side right under the lamp or would it be pretty close to being the same as the middle? I'm doing the wet towel thing and it covers a little more than half of the top and I think the thermometer, hygrometer that is in the middle is just under this towel. Oh, and should the hygrometer(s) be at the same level as the thermometers (Just above the substrate) since that's pretty much where the snake is? Anyway, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

i just keep one in the middle. since you have one with a probe you can check like once or twice a month the humidity of different parts of the tank just by moving the probe to the hot side or cool side.

Actually it doesn't have a probe. Just measures where I have it placed which is in the middle. If you say that's good enough then that's what I'll stick with then. Thanks

You only need 2 thermometers - warm side and cool side. Digitals with probes are best because you will actually be measuring where you need to - the surface (belly temps). I've never really heard where to put the hygrometer. Looking in my tanks my Ball Pythons is on the cool side, my Kenyans is on the warm side and my Mex Black Kingsnakes is in the middle (it's actually a quarantine tank). I'd be interested to hear where it should go as well. I'm guessing maybe it should be on the warm side since it is probably more humid on that side? I dunno.

I got my digitals from bigappleherp.com and I love them. Those analog and stick on ones make me leary. I've seen them in the store and they sometimes have all different readings. Although I do plan to use them in my new rack, but the heat will also be set on a thermostat and I have my proexotics temp gun to always double check things.

I just ordered a temp gun from pro exotics and I can't wait to get it and try it out! I didn't even know they existed until I saw them advertised on here. This way I'll know the temps of the entire tank instead of just the back wall. How long did it take for you to get yours? Just curious.

I can't remember how long it took, but I don't think it took that long. You'll love it!

the best analog therms/hydrogmeters are the exo-terra brand IMO. even though they are twice the cost as the other ones, if you use a rack it is well worth it.

Good - those are the ones I bought for my rack. They seemed to be the more accurate. Thanks - I feel better now.
