Photos: reps and ants of the day

Cable_Hogue Mar 20, 2004 06:18 PM

Hi All,
We were out hiking near Victorville today. Another beautiful spring day in the desert.
We saw countless side blotch and similar reps, one long nose Leopard and one Platyrhinos.

Gordon, sorry for the poor ant pic but can you give me an idea what these might be?

Check out some of the photos below.
Cheers!

Cable
The ant looks like Myrmecocystus, either mexicanus or testaceus. Neither species is usually active during the day so I'm guessing you dug them up?? Sounds like a great day, it certainly was a nice one.

Hey Gordon,
Do you know where I can order some small vials for preserving ants?

Thanks again!

Yup Gordon, I found the hole and used my shoe to dig it up a bit.
It's probably hard to tell from the pic but they were just a little smaller than P. Californicus.
Thanks for the ID!

I would indeed go with M. testaceus then. M. mexicanus is a larger species.
For vials about the best option I can think of is Bioquip.com
