Luecistic? Blizzard? this novice is confused

tammyaldrich Mar 20, 2004 09:52 PM

What is the difference between a blizzard and a luecistic gecko? They have the same appearance to my novice eye. I am interested in purchasing one and would like to have information beforehand. Thank you!

Also,I am looking for a super detailed care sheet that is geared toward the beginner gecko owner. If anyone knows where this can be found, can you direct me to it? or if someone is kind enough to send to me at galdrich9032@earthlink.net that would be wonderful.

Thank you so much,
Tammy

Patternless leos (leucistic is actually an incorrect term...but is a common name for the patternless morph) are born with a splotchy pattern on them...when they grow up the pattern goes away. Very often patternless leos have orange in their tails. Blizzards on the other hand are born without any markings (except for a greyish patch on their heads), and won't have any orange in their tails. The base color for either morph can vary from tangerine to dark grey. The morphs are caused by mutations on 2 separate genes, so mating between the two would produce normal looking leos that carry both a gene for patternless and a gene for blizzard.

I have an okay caresheet. Any feedback about it would be awesome. And, of course, smarty-pants Christina is correct, once again!

thank you so much Christina and Josh for answering but I still did not understand if a leucistic/patternless and a blizzard gecko are one in the same or if they are different geckos

StinaUIUC Mar 21, 2004 12:25 AM

they are both leopard geckos...but different mutations (morphs) that if 2 leos, one of each patternless and blizzard, are bred together do not produce similar appearing offspring offspring. The "control" for the solid color appearance for each of the morphs originates from a different gene, and so they aren't the same.

Leucistic animals are pure white with blue eyes.
