Ionizer in snake room???????

serpentsplus Mar 20, 2004 10:48 PM

Well, I went to the Oreck store today to pickup the air purifier I seen them advertise on TV. As I was talking to the sale person, I asked him why the Ionizer has an on/off switch. He replied saying, the Ionizer has been known to kill exotic birds, and that he thinks it also affects some lizards. Well I explained what I do and were I planned on putting the purifier. He said he didn't know about snakes and that he wasn't even sure about the lizards. I purchased the purifier and put it in the snake room (with the Ionizer off of course). I looked through the owners manual and it said nothing about this. So if any of you have any info on this situation, please post. My main concern is my reptiles. Will it be safe to use the ionizer?

Here is the url to the purifier I bought:

Thank you, all!!

The only thing I can think of is if it messes with the magnetic homing in some birds and/or reptiles like alligators. I don't know if this device has the power to create a false north or not, and I am not familiar with the species of bird or reptile that may be affected....but it sounds like this may be one possible cause for concern?

I have read something on WebMD.com about the Ionic Breeze causing Ozone and how it is bad for asthma sufferers. I would definitely look into this and be careful with your animals.

I haven't read anything but used to work where there was some ionizers in the rooms and they not only triggered my asthma but smelled unpleasant and gave me a headache. The dealer claimed I was in the lowest percent and most folks didn't have any trouble at all. Not something I would use, but don't know how dangerous they are.
