Do snakes sneeze?

MightyPython Mar 20, 2004 11:55 PM

I posted something about my BP below twice that nobody every responded too. I listed it as snake hiccups (kind of kidding when I titled it that way) when it might be more accurate to say that he's been sneezing. Do snakes sneeze? I'm taking him to a vet again because the last Vet I just took him too said he was fine and I think he's full of you know what because my BP has all the signs of a RI and those sudden puffs of air he's blowing out maybe sneezes, if they do that sort of thing. Is this just another symptom of a RI? Like I said before, he rubs his nose a lot, mouth breathes for brief periods of time, points his head up alot, and now thing sneezing thing. I haven't seen any bubbles at all but I thought when I listened closely that I could hear slight noises at times when he breathes. I called and talked to a guy who owns a reptile shop who is a herpetoculturist and he said that whatever reptile vet I took him too had no idea what he's talking about! He recommended somebody to me and told me to tell them that he needs antibiotics! He sounded very angry that a Vet would tell me that! Anyway, any answers about the sneezing thing would be appreciated. Thanks!

From what I understand (not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but came from 2 very respected reptile vets), snakes cannot sneeze and they cannot cough. That is why respiratory problems aren't rare and that's why they're very had to get rid of. When humans get crap in their throat/lungs, we can hack it out. Snakes cannot.
Hope this helps,
