Any reasons not to feed while in shed?

Tigergenesis Mar 21, 2004 07:59 AM

Someone posted on another forum that you risk regurgitation if you feed while in shed - is this correct? If so why? Any reasons not to feed while in shed?

I have heard the same and seen it in other's animals but never had my own do it. That said I had my baby Children's eat in shed and then the shed stuck on the bulge of the meal. I had to soak her and work it off a day later....after she digested and wouldn't regurg. It was STUCK by then too.

I think some of the problem is that the animal is using stress and energy to shed and a big meal is too much added stress on the system. A smaller meal might work better.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

I offer my snakes food when they are in shed, and most of them eat most of the time. I agree that perhaps you would avoid a particularly huge meal during these times, and try not to do anything else that may stress the snake out. If the individual has a history of regurge, you might also avoid this time. When the snake's eyes are cloudy, vision is impaired and some can become more easily stressed. For well established individual animals which are good feeders, etc...I don't see any problems.

thanks guys! I was kind of thinking along the same lines: feed smaller meal and not when eyes are opaque. I don't feed my BP or KSB when in shed, but I went ahead and tried feeding my new Mex Blk King while he was in shed - he'll eat anything. I did give him a smaller fuzzy than he's used to. No problems, but thought I'd ask.

Thanks.

I have one a Coastal Carpet Python that always has a shed fall on the same day as feeding day, and she has never had a problem with a meal, I just let her know the food is there on her feeding shelf (she always goes to that shelf when she smells food) And then I watch her carefully to make sure she can find the head afterwards. She has a problem with knocking the rat off the shelf into her water bowl and forgetting about it.

The only snake I have ever had regurg on a shed was a yellow rat when i was a kid, and i didnt know better.

It is best to let the snake be during the entire shed process. Not saying a meal will cause problems persay, but it isn't needed, so why do it?
