Post 30 day shed temp question

Kegman Mar 21, 2004 08:23 AM

Ok..I am not sure what to do here as this will be my 1st clutch. I know my female has eggs but I was wondering if I should put the temperature in her enclosure back to normal or leave it cycling as it has been since breeding started. A well known breeder told me to leave it alone until she lays her egss, but I didn't know why or if it would hurt for the nightime temps to go back up. Seems to me that that would help her keep the eggs warm, even if they are still inside of her. She had her prelay shed 2 weeks ago. Any thoughts here?

By the way, I bought a hovabator for my first incubator and I have tested it and the temp is locked right onto 89 degrees.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I would have returned my temps to normal after ovulation. She needs to keep warm at this point! Just my take on the situation...

Do you have your container and medium in your hovabator? It's good to let your medium come to temp well before your eggs are laid. That's if hovabators hold containers... I have never used one.

Good Luck,

That sounds like good advice and only confirms my concerns. Thanks Oz.

No, I have not put the medium in the hovabator yet but I will. I did wonder if the temperature setting would be different if it wasn't in there. I am using vermiculite. I am still a couple of weeks away from eggs...I think? I did write down her last shed and counted 30 days which puts me on April 6th. She also is roaming the container quite a bit the last 2 days. Does this mean anything to you? She seems restless in a way.

I would go ahead and get my medium cooking so you have a nice uniform temp. You also want to make sure your medium is not drying out fast.

Your female may be restless because she's looking for a warm spot. My gravid females curl up in the heat-conservation position and pretty much stay put on the warm end until they lay eggs.
