Question for Jeff Lemm about Cordylus at San Diego...........

tgreb Mar 21, 2004 08:33 AM

Hi Jeff
I was wondering if the Zoo still has Cordylus giganteus and if they were ever successfull at breeding them there? I was there probably about 12-15 years ago and they had a whole outdoor enclosure full along with Uromastyx benti and some other type of cordylus. Just curious as I have heard they are very tough to breed. Thanks for your time. Tom Greb

Hi Tom,
Yes, they are still out there, but I'm not sure if they have bred them. I don't think the guys have much time to work them out, too many animals. And I have also heard they are tough to breed.

Too bad they are so busy. I don't think you can get them cold enough for hibernation in San Diego unless you put them in a fridge. Thanks for taking the time to answer. I know of several people working with them that have just came up empty and I thought you might be able to help. Thanks again Jeff.

I believe Bert LAngerwerf is the only person in the US to have bred them. He had his years before anything happened and they do get very cold there. I think they probably will never get cold enough here - better get out that fridge!

I think his success was very limited and I believe he got rid of his. He told me he thought it was a wasted effort to put time into these animals as they are very difficult to almost impossible to breed. As Gerald Durrell once said you can breed anything in captivity if only you find all the pieces of the puzzle so to speak. Thanks Jeff!
