Question about Calcium supplement

fadetolemons Mar 21, 2004 08:40 AM

Hey, I've got some Fluker's Calcium powder but I'm pretty sure it has some vitamin D3 in it, which i've heard leos can overdose on. Is this a problem? Do I need to go get some w/out D3? Should I get some w/out D3 but still use the one w/ D3 on occasion so they have a little vitamin D? Thanks

Unless I'm mistaken, the problem with D3 is that leos are nocturnal, and don't get enough exposure to UV light which is what helps convert the D3. I would recommend getting calc dust without D3, or at least making sure it isn't large amounts. I'm no expert, and probably need to do more research on this stuff myself because I think the D3 is directly related to the Phosphorus somehow... anyway, not much help I suppose, but to be safe I'd get some without D3.

Leos don't get UV from the sun so they need it from their food items. Without D3, they can not absorb the calcium. I don't know much about the Fluker's formulation but I use Sticky Tongue Farm's Minerall (I) because it has just the right amount of minerals. I don't know where you heard D3 was bad for leos but it is essental for good bone health.
