Large plastic bins for breeding Bearded Dragons?

Vargas Mar 21, 2004 11:23 AM

Hi,
Is there a brand of large plastic bin that is at least 4 feet long - 2 feet high and 2 feet deep that would be good to use for large Bearded Dragon breeding projects? (among other smaller species)
I am using 1.1 pairs and 1.2 trios mainly in these breeding projects. I have been building custom breeding cages and using Rubbermaid tubs with success although its not that efficient at times. The Rubbermaid's I am using although big, tend to be too tall and the lack depth needed - building cages works but can be time consuming. Is there any off the shelf large plastic bins/tubs people know of? I was thinking of checking with a restaurant supply place but wanted to ask here first if anyone knows of any tried and true product(s)
Thanks Steve

Well the short answer is no, nothing very close to those exact dimensions. There is one plastic manufacturer that does custom work and even has a stock item that is close to the size you listed. However, they have a very large minimum order. I think I looked into how much a minimum order for that size would be and the cost per box ended up being very, very high.

I used to have a flier from them but it was lost in the flood. At the moment I cannot recall their name. Regardless, it appeared that approaching a local plastic vaccum forming company would be a better choice at the time.

Have you looked at the Rubbermaid water troughs? Those and the galvanized steel versions are fairly close to what you are looking for. They are very popular with Varanid keepers. Maybe try the monitor forum for more information.

Another option are the large fiberglass tubs that are popular among large-scale fish breeders/farms. I don't know where to track those down, however.

Rob & Amy Zerkel have some G-Pig pin 24x42 but there only 10 deep so you'd have to put a top on them. There on the classifides under mouse cages.

Around Christmas time Wal-mart was selling containers that were meant to hold decorations (trees). They measure about 53x21x14 (LxWxH)made by Iris USA, Inc. http://www.irisusainc.com See page 29 of the online catalog. They may not be deep enough for what you need, but maybe the lid could be modified.

I am actually constructing a rack system using these christmas tree containers. It will be another month or so before they are done, and I will post pics then. The only problem with them is the height, but I think I have that fixed. They are vey long, and with the system I am working with, they are capable of being used in stacks 4 or even 5 high. The way I am using them is turning them long ways, the same way that snake cages are, where the length is actually the depth, if that makes sence. They are sliding cages of course, and can be completely removed for cleaning. On a wall that is 12' long by 7'high, it is possible to have 20 cages 25 if you go 5 high. That is alot of adult bearded dragon cages in a "small" amount of space, especially considering they are 4 and a half feet "long". I am also working on building a divider to split them into 2 cages to house babies. Think about that, 50 cages for babies that are roughly 2'x2'. That can house alot of babies!!! Now all I need is to get more females to start breeding, hehehe. These are the largest that I have found that are not too tall. I will post pics of the finished product when available.
