My new iguana dosne't move much

savana_man Mar 21, 2004 03:11 PM

I got him yesterday from the reptile show and he hasn't moved much at all. He dosen't climb or anything just sits there at the bottom of the cage. The cage temp where he is is around 80. Last night he moved a good bit and drank alot of water and today when I got him out for a sec he just looked at me and went to sleep on my sholder. Also when I got him I noticed he was sneezing alot. Thanks for any help or info. I think I remeber reading that they sneeze to release extra salt in their bodies or something but im not sure about that.

First off he is too cold. His basking spot should be between 95 and 100 degrees. He also needs UVB in addition to his basking bulb. Reptisun 5.0 is the bulb I use. What are you feeding it? Is there anything around (a kid, cat... etc) that could be scaring him? As with any new reptile you should take him to the vet for a fecal screen and a wellness check just so u will know what you are up against. Also, while you are out, I recommend you pick up, "Iguanas for Dummies" by Melissa Kalpan. If you have any other questions feel free to e mail me at kryinkowgirl@yahoo.com.

I agree. Warm him up first, UVB and diet need to be the next issues.

Along with Melissa's book, I personally love "Green Iguana: The Ultimate Owner's Manual" by James Hatfield. The book is quite a read, but worth it because you get a lot of other Igunana owners stories and perspectives as well as the authors.

Thanks for the replies. I just got back from the store and I got him a UVA light and have an old UVB, but I have ordered a new one. About the vet.....I called one this morning and he said if he isn't better by tomorrow I can bring him in early.

The bulb I just got didn't work and then when I unscrewed it it broke. My dad is bringing another one home for me but that will be like 3 more hours. I found a zoo med buld that emits UVA, UVB, and heat for $31.99 on petguys.com. I think i'm going to order that.

a regular light bulb will work for heat for now...the Powersun bulbs you are talking about also put out a lot of heat so make sure your temps are not too high and cook your ig...90 to 95 in the basking area and low to mid 80s in the cooler zone....make sure you have a ceramic socket to put the powersun in...they are rated for the higher wattage bulbs....good luck...Lyn

With 3 lamps going I have the cage warm enough. His basking spot is in the high 80's.....it will be more when the new bulb gets here. He has been more active today then he has ever been. He bit the [bleep] out of me when I tried to pick him up this morning..lol! But hes been running around my sisters room in the sun. I thought he might want a place to get away from me so I cut a large hole in a shoebox and put it in there.

mommyof2greenigs Mar 24, 2004 08:32 PM

Andy the one in the pic "typing" is approx 18 months old. I also have another ig that is approx. 14 months old. Both are sexed males and have been through their first season and we came through rather easily with no broken bones and no bites
