Impaction at pet store!

fadetolemons Mar 21, 2004 04:11 PM

I went to a local Petsmart today, I was going to get some calcium supplement without D3 in it, because the stuff i had did contain D3. Anyways, I looked to see what kind of reptiles they had, and they had a smallll tank, like 5 gal, with 3 adult leos and this plated lizard probably over a foot long all in it. It was terrible, and this one leo was sitting, in the light, his eyes somewhat open, really really glossy and filmy, and he looked really discolored. His legs were all bent backwards really strangely like he had fallen or something, and his tail looked sort of like it had been deflated. He looked awful, and the geckos were kept on sand, so it looked like it could be impaction, because i read that when the digestive tracts get clogged by sand, they use the fat stored in their tails, and his was so empty. Anyways, what should i do?

Fade, where are you located, because I find my PetsMarts here in south florida mistreat all their reptiles, including the leos. I see dead leos, and run away leos that are stuck in the window slides. Its pretty aweful.

Do you know what your petsmart provides for the animals to drink? I noticed my petsmart provides this yellow stuff... possible gatorade...

I live in North Carolina, and I actually got my leos from a petsmart, a different one than what i'm talking about, and I got them very young, just like 2 or 3 weeks old, and the petsmart had only carried them for 2 or 3 days. The one i bought mine at which was about an hour away seemed to take good care of them, and the employees all had leos for pets, so they knew what they were doing. However, the one in my city isn't that great w/ reptiles. I'm pretty sure they just let the leos drink water, but that one looked very ill.

here is wat i would do even though it might not work i would actually try to talk to the manager and say you know this isnt the right way to teach an animal.... i mean heck think if you were the animal no thanx man tell the dude that he needs to take better care of his leo's

another thing you could try is awfer a deal to the guy saying i will buy these leo's off of you for 5-20 dollors just to try to help them out other wise there is just about nothing you can do or even try to sue the company for takening terrible care of there lepard geko

I work for a new PetSmart in PA, and their are many, many rules and regulations at the store which prevent quite a few things (including giving animals gatorade for water and allowing a consumer to blackmail for sick animals). PetSmart is a LARGE corporation, you aren't going to get a store director or speciality manager to bend. BUT...if you cruise around the habitat (where the small animals and birds are), there should be a card or 2 hanging up with a number to call the corporation for concern about animals care and health. If you make the phone call, and the district director actually gives a crap, [bleep] will hit the fan and that store will go under a microscope. Trust me, at my store, ANY customer complaint is investigated. I've pissed off a number of customers because they wanted to stick a goldfish in a fish bowl, a Pacu in a 10 gallon tank or an anole in a critter keeper...and every time, management would come to me and ask me what happened. I would explain the situation, tell them exactly why I would not hand over our animals to the idiot, and I would be on my way (management usually nods and agrees with me - mainly in part I think because they hired me to do a job, I know what I'm doing, and I'm not going to be suckered). If you can't find the number, I go into work Weds and I'll copy it down for you...

First thing to do would be to talk to the manager...if they fix thengs then you're good...although they probably won't... In that case your best bet would be to call or e-mail the state department of natural resources (DNR). You should be able to find the number by searching online. They WILL get something done!! Do not offer to buy the animals...they're obviously not being taken care of and even if they don't look ill they probably are...besides the fact that you'd have to pay outrageous vet bills to get them healthy (if you even could get them healthy...), you would only be encouraging the store to get more of them.
