iamdickie Mar 21, 2004 05:47 PM

my beardy is sick. he is 7 months old and his chest was stuck out in front, like he over ate. he cannot close his mouth. he looks like he is trying to puke, but i dont know. I thought it might be impaction, but i dont think this is the case because i am using fine grade sand for him. any ideas would be helpful. i have never seen this before. his chest is now back to normal, howver his toungue is now dried out from not being able to close it. he has water, but is real sick help!

Give him a soak in warm water to help rehydrate, hopefully he will also poop in it. Has he been pooping? You said he is on sand, what kind? Any sand can cause impaction, it's really not good stuff. What are his temps like? What has he been eating?

If he can't close his mouth, something is preventing him from doing so. Can you see anything stuck in there? I would go to an emergency clinic if your regular vet is not open. They may not see herps regularly, but they can look inside of his mouth and see what is causing him to keep it open. He will get dehydrated quickly with his mouth stuck open and he is probably stressed. Go to the vet today!

I agree, an immediate vet check is important. WIth his mouth open that way, it could mean a bad respiratory infection, something lodged in this throat, either because it wouldn't fit going down or got stuck while he was trying to throw it back up. Is he even breathing well, does it sound funny?
