I've had this newt for a while and am wondering what kind he is.
He has really rough, bumpy skin so I thought that he was a roughback newt, but he doesn't have a solid orange stomach like I have read that they have. Any idea?

heres another pic of him...

Just guessing here but it looks like a Japanese firebellied newt. He seems quite large when compared to the frog in the tank. Just a warning, but I would seperate the two for the good of both animals. Check out www.caudata.orc/cc/ for some mixing disasters.

I have Japanese and Chinese firebelly newts and they look nothing like this newt. That's what has me puzzled. And you're right he's quite a bit bigger than the others that I have.
its a Paramesotriton of some kind-look at the pics avail on caudata.org and compare them up- i am not the only one who has trouble telling them apart. i doubt its a hongkong warty, but it is one of the warty newts.(its also not a caudopunctatus-that one is easy)
Paramesotriton, possibly P. fungzhongensis.

Hi there:
I keep newts and other herps too. One time a local fish outlet was selling what was labeled as "Giant fire-bellied newts." One of my friends purchased one, and there was obviously something really fishy about it. It turned out to be a Hong Kong warty newt, which I'm almost sure is what you have. They are basicaly fire-bellies, except for their adult size, as well as some skin color and texture differences. They make really great captives.
P.S. As that clawed frog grows, you might think of getting another tank...

Wait:
It's either that or some oddly-colored crested newt...

I have had newts killed by frogs eating their toes & stressing them to death.

They are in a 33 long tank and are watched very carefully. They have been together for about 3 months with no problems, but will be separated at the first sign of trouble.
