I usually just tap the jar into a coke cup I got at a Cowboy game
I take the lid off and tap the container so the flies in the container fall, then tap the flies on the lid into the cup with the suppliment in it, then put the lid back on really quick.

well, see, i tried tapping them but nothing comes out. these ones are flightless fruitflies (D. hydei) I tried running something along the side to kinda scoop em out but i think it did more damage than helped.
I just flick the sides while holding somewhat upside down. not totally upside down but angled. they go into a smaller container which has the supplements and then into the tank they go.

with flys you should the exact opposite effect. you should have problems keeping them in. how do you have your cultures set up. is it just the medium or do you have stuff for the flys to crawl around on in the jar.
There is like stringy white stuff in the jar they are all in and then gooey stuff at the bottom. A lot are just larvas sticking on the sides. I just got them at a recent show and I have never bought fruitflies before.
hi andy....
the stringy stuff sounds like it might be excelcior.[?] does it sort of looks like the stuff they put in easter baskets.
also if you do have hydea like i think you said do not throw a way the culture when there are no flys in it. hydea, over 3-4 weeks, take longer than melanagasters, around 2 weeks to hatch out. to start with you should of gotten some of the melanagasters. hydea are bigger though. just give it time. then one day you will have too many at once.
Yeah Thats the stuff. I have been having better luck now. I have also been resting the jar upside down so when i open it there are some ready to fall.
Thanks everyone for your help.
