Cameron Highlands Cave Rat

ronda Mar 21, 2004 08:02 PM

I acquired this male as a two year old last spring, and he has always been very unhandleable. I wear gloves to change his water! I have never been able to take photos of him, because I couldn't get close enough without being struck at, and I certainly didn't want to take him outside. Today I got brave, and what do you know?? He was a perfect gentleman! Here he is at last... my Cameron Highlands male:

Not many Camerons around. Here's my Cameron male. I acquired him as hatchling 2 years ago with a female but unfortunately she never thrived . I keep waffling between selling him and acquiring another female if one ever becomes available...

How come I've never heard of this beauty?!

What is their relation to the ridleyi?
I have a pair-

My female has always been a bit yellow... is that common for a ridleyi?

Any information on this cameron highlands cave rat is WELCOME.

Cave rat... ridleyi... same thing. Ridleyi originating from the Cameron highlands generally have a bright yellow stipe rather than a white stripe. I've also heard that they stay a little smaller.

I have a female that looks like yours. She doesn't have the bright yellow of a Cameron highlands animal, but she definitely isn't white. I've got two more that look just like your male, with a nice white stripe.

Hey David,

Nice looking snake! I only have a male as well, and have paired him up with a unknown-locale female who has a yellow stripe, but not the intensity of a Cameron animal. Hopefully they'll produce some nice yellow offspring, even though I can't sell them as locale animals.

How long is your male? My white-striped ridleyi are considerably larger than my Cameron male and yellow-striped female.

He's probably around 3 feet. But he's not quite 2 years old and I've had him on a pretty modest feeding schedule.
