Good Fake Plants?

antonm Mar 21, 2004 08:54 PM

Does anyone know of a site where I can buy some nice looking fake plants? I've been trying to do live and I just dont have the time or consistency to keep them in good shape. Now that I'm upgrading my cage to a much larger one I feel its going to be even tougher. Any tricks on how to keep plants well without endangering the lizards would also be nice...with enough encouragement I might keep them...

For what is it worth I have actually found that plants are easier to keep in large vs. small cages. Much easier, actually. But I assume the species of lizard in question has the most to do with this.

In general the biggest problem with keeping plants in the vivarium is lack of ventilation. I think we get too obsessed with keeping in heat and humidity that the air gets stagnant. This is probably one of the biggest differences between US and European breeders. They use significant amounts of ventilation and even add fans and other mechanical devices to move the air. They have great success with their herps and their plants.

Also, I have had best luck with fake plants from "Hobby Lobby" and other craft supply stores. Once a year or so they have closeout sales and I go buy bunches of them. Much better to pick them out in person from my experience. You also save a ton on shipping. Most important is you can see in person which plants have little plastic loops and other dangerous things for the herps.

In fact it's usually this time of year they have the sales...

These are tokay geckos. The tank in question is at this point a 65 gallon but will soon be upgraded to a 100-120. The new design will feature screen and I actually did engineer a computer fan attachment that will move air right through the cage. Never heard of anyone doing it but I guess us Europeans think alike lol. I havnt heard of the store you speak of, if you know of any in San Jose CA or even in that area in general it would be appreciated.

I just checked online and there are not Hobby Lobby stores anywhere near California. There must be something similar.

Your future setup sounds great. I highly encourage you to continue with live plants.

However, the fake rubber vines available at hobby stores are fanstastic. Very hard to duplicate naturally. I would still track those down in your area if possible.

Petsmart has a pretty wide selection of fake plants. They even have cannabis imitations. I'm not sure if you have those in your area though....
