BEST diet for a baby argus monitor??

susanpearl Mar 21, 2004 09:16 PM

Hi,

I currently have a baby argus monitor that's a couple of months old. I feed him/her a diet exclusively of crickets.

Do you recommend any other sort of supplement, and/or meal type?

I tried to give him/her a very little fuzzy mouse, but was not interested (he looked at and walked away). I left it in the tank for a couple of hours and it was still there.

Any suggestions, regarding diet recommendation would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,

Susan P.

Argus are from PNG and northern Oz you probably have PNG and they eat inverts and lizards sometimes even crustaceans make rodents their principle food item, but offer these every once in a while. Today i fed mine some lizards i caught in the back yard and they went nuts.

Hey Susan, I'm no expert, as we have got the same species, and they are about the same age. You probably know as much as I do concerning them. Mine Argus is about 17" and eating fuzzies and hoppers. Which he eagerly takes right off of tongs. Feeding your Argus just crickets has got to be expensive, when I ran out of frozen mice I was giving mine crickets, till I recieved my mice in the mail. He was eating just about two dozen a day. Maybe you could not feed your argus for a couple of days and them try a small rodent food item. Are you concerned about feeding your argus just crickets?? As long as you dust the crickets with a vit. min. supplement crickets are just fine. I feed mine rodents, because its much cheaper a single hopper mouse is .35 cents, at his size one a day keeps him satisfied, or two fuzzies which are .28 cents. I buy them in bulk from rodent breeders, I just recieved 150 fuzzies and 100 hoppers, this costed me 93 dollars shipped. I take a item out of the freezer every day thaw it and I don't have to worry about going to the pet store or ordering food. I'm thinking this should last me for 2.5-3 months.
I guess you have to decide what you want to feed your Argus, if you want to switch to rodents I've got some other ideas if your interestd. Hope this helped a little,Clint
