Gravid Corn... SHE seems fine but I need reassurance

lovelyleopards Mar 22, 2004 12:28 AM

Hi Guys,

I have a female corn that I'm almost positive is gravid, and I want to make sure all is going according to nature's plan. This is my first attempt at breeding snakes, so bare with me. She had her post-brumation shed on 3/6/04, and she fed the same day. She bred on the 9th, the 11th, and the 16th. She fed again on the 13th, right according to schedule. When I tried to feed her yesterday, no response at all. She's soaking in her water bowl, which she has never done. I attacheda bad blurry pic that I snapped in a hurry, but it shows her overall body shape. She sure looks hefty to me. On 2/21, when she was first taken out of brumation, she was 482 grams. She's now at 510 after just two feedings. Does all of this sound normal so far? She's looking a bit dusky to me, and I think her belly is going a bit milky. Is this the infamous post-lay shed approaching? It seems too soon, doesn't it? She's been kept warm, at about 80-82 during the day and upper 70s at night. Thanks for any reassurance!

Sounds normal to me, She does look gravid and the fast weight gain is a good sign as well. the only thing though, if she is going into the blue it is her PRE-lay shed and after that she should lay her eggs within 2 weeks but usually less and in some cases before so make sure you have a nest box in there that is moist and humid so that she doesn't lay her eggs in the water bowl. Caongrats! it sounds like you've done everythinbg right on track. Keep us updated!

Hehe, another reason you shouldn't try to post at 2 AM. I meant pre-lay shed. I put a lay box in with her with moist peat moss. Thanks so much for the reply - just want to make sure all sounds normal . Can't wait to see how many little eggies I get! I'm sure I'll just have to post pics when she lays. Thanks so much!

>>my snow ate her last meal 21 days before laying.
I had read that they will tend to go off food when they become heavy with eggs. She did. She ate the day after laying though and has been back on her regular feedinh schedule since. She is looking good now.

Thanks Jimmy,

I had read that too, but it's always nice to her someone say that it actually happened to them. I guess it just makes me a little nervous when a normally good feeding snake quits cold turkey. I just went to look at her, and her belly is monstrous. I guess I wouldn't really feel much like eating either . Take care!
