Help! Baby turtle won't eat...

mnh3281 Mar 22, 2004 10:30 AM

Hi all! I just replied to the previous thread because I have had the same experience with my baby turtle. I have a RES that was given to me, but "adopted" from AON. This little guy isn't my first turtle, for I have three others - two RES and one painted. I received two babies in January from a friend, but they had been adopted from AON. One has died and the other one is still going, but I haven't seen her eat since I received her 2 1/2 months ago. She will sometimes get the energy up to swim around, but otherwise she will just lay on her basking rock. I have the temperature at about 75 degrees and her basking is at about 80-85. I have tried bringing the temperature of the water up to around 80 to stimulate feeding, but that didn't work. When it comes to simulating her appetite, I have tried everything I can think of: Turtle food, mashed up turtle food, meal worms, tuna, raw meats (chicken, beef), and vegetables. I don't know what to do. I am very worried because she is so lethargic and I know she needs to eat. What can I do? Is there anyway to get the turtles mouth open? I feel like she just needs the taste of food in her mouth and that will stimulate her appetite. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I am desperate! Thanks so much...

Meredith

chicken flavored canned dog food. Try it several times
before giving up on it. They will usually just smell it
first but by the 3rd of 4th attempt he may just eat it.

Good luck

Put it in the freezer in a little bowl of water to kill it quick and put it out of it's misery. lol, just playing, try something moving like earthworms or feeder fish. If worse goes to "worser" take it to a herp vet.
