question/help with rescued bearded dragon

bckeith Mar 22, 2004 12:11 PM

I acquired a bearded dragon from someone who didn't know what he was doing. The bearded is about 1 1/2 years old and about 12 inches long. The base of his tale is fat, which lets me know he has been eating. However, he has not had much exposure to any UV lighting or sun. He has a bad 'karate chop' walk and he shakes his back legs every now and then while walking. I have started giving him dusted crickets, which he does eat, and watering (spraying) about 3 times a day. I have also got a powersun light on him and the temps are good. My question is, can the MBD be reversed? Also, in time, will his front legs straighten out? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
btw, i have also been giving him some liquid calcium thru a dropper.

I would bring him to the vet for a complete diagnosis and get him some calcium/vitamin injections. You are doin the right things, i commend you for that. Just bring him into the vet and see if the vet can give him a diagnosis and maybe give him some injections, possibly get an xray. Im not sure about the reversal, so hopefully someone else will chirp in. Good luck, keep us posted

You can get them healthy again, but if there are deformities from the MBD those will not reverse. I had a beardie for eight years that was one year old and severely deformed from MBD when I got him. The deformities never got better, but he did very well for a long time.

What kind of liquid calcium are you using? I hope it is not Solar Drops, or something like that. If it is be careful with that product. It has a lot of vitamin D3 and has been associated with renal failure in several iguanas. I would take dmlove's advice and have him evaluated by a reptile veterinarian. They can give you a safer liquid calcium supplement. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

The calcium that I am using is calcium gluco(something). I'm not sure the full name of it. My friend gave me a bottle of it. He got it from the vet for his bearded.

Good, probably Neo-Calglucon. Very safe stuff, no worries!
