Need Ideas for a 'natural' water hide

jeffharding Mar 22, 2004 02:10 PM

My ball never uses his water. I keep the cage at 60% humidity or higher, I noramally spray the cage with water while he is eating in his feeding tub. I have many plants and am using Bed-A-Beast substrate. When I spray, the humidity goes up to about 85% and then drops off throughout the next 2 days back to 60%. I have the top of the cage covered in saran wrap to keep some humidity in. I was wondering if I convert his water bowl into a 'water hide', will he get his necessary humidity from that? Or is >60% good enough? Anyone have a good idea for making the water bowl into a hide that he will find appealing? Everything in the cage is natural, the grapewood, the plants are live, I am using a clay pot upside down for the warm hide and a piece of bark for the cool hide. Please share your ideas with me so Mitch can get hydrated when he wants!

>60% humidity is fine. For a natural water hide i suggest if you have a planted vivarium plant some ferns around the water bowl.

i've had good results with taking a rubbermaid container & just cutting a hole in the top of the lid (a lil bigger than the snakes thickness). My humidity if around 60 to 70 % & every snake I've given this to so far has used it.

Your humidity sounds fine. How have his sheds been (if he's shed for you)? Do you have a pic of your setup you can post? It sounds very interesting - I'd love to see it.

I don't have a camera to take pics just yet. It is cool looking, very natural. I have two different kinds of palms in there, but Mitch is destroying the one, trying to climb in it. I think I am going to try to 'hide' the water dish, so he deems it safe to go into. I haven't experienced a full shed with him yet. I think I found some shedded skin in his warm hide last week, but it didnt look like enough for a full shed. When I looked at him, his belly was pink and it didnt look like he had any dead skin on him. I am thinking he is going to do a full shed in the near future. He has been in his cool hide for the last two days and he normally doesnt use that one too much, is there a correlation between that and shedding? If 60% humidity is good, is it bad if I spray to get it to 75-80% once a week? I will try to get pics as soon as possible. thanks guys

one cause of bad sheds is low humidity. 50-60% when not in shed is fine. 70% during shed is good. I'm not sure if it's good for them to have higher humidity levels all the time - I'm thinking may cause RI?

What are your belly temps on the cool and warm side?

If you ever get pics - post them. Always looking for ideas.

Yeah, they can be hard on live plants - that's why many people go for plastic plants.
