Rack question!

clownsox Mar 22, 2004 04:24 PM

Ok I have built a pretty good rack system for my leos using melamine rack, sterilite housing and flexwatt for heat. I just came back from wal-mart to buy a couple of sterilite bins and saw that they have sterilite stackable drawers does anyone know if theese can be used as a rack system? Or has anyone ever tried?

These types of drawer systems can be used for terrestrial geckos with no escape issues. I know there are some brands/models that work much better as far as the actual drawer mechanism but I'm not sure which ones.

Biggest problem is if you use sand for a substrate. The weight really makes them a pain to use.

Its probably good for lizards but I use them sometimes to feed some smaller snakes in and they can get out...but I'm sure lizards can't get that high up.

The funny thing is I was looking at some and wondering if I can use them as a rack then before I knew it someone here had done it. So yes they can be use and you should be getting replies soon I myself want to see and others used them and how, what i want to know is a good way to heat them some say the way the draws are heat tape cant go under. One person I remember posted that he used light bulbs going down the side and another person I believe used cristmas lights but I dont like either of those ideas. Im just waiting for someone to find a way to use heat tape and im in I will most likey then get some.

I think I'll give it a try they are very cheap. But I just need some ideas on heating dont know if flexwatt would work.

I use a similar pastic set up as the one shown in your post. Mine is bigger, I think 22" X 14". I use them to house juvie/young adult leopard geckos. I use paper towel with a VERY thin layer of calci sand. It is a cinch to clean. My herp room stays at aroun 74 - 78 degrees. They sit near a boa cage so they get some more heat from it. With my handy new temp gun I find the temp drops about .5 to 1.3 degrees from drawer to drawer. The bottom is the only one I really need to heat. I use a regular human heat pad to just raise the temp slightly.
