So what do you want to do? PUt a solid piece of glass for the top of an aquarium.WHere do you plan to get your ventalation, and what are you going to mount it down with so the snake doesnt get out.My suggestion is make a new top out of wood, or plexiglass so you can vent it, or cover almost most of the tank top with glass and get a screen top to go over that and then mount it down or put something on top so nothing can get out.I've made tops out of both wood and plexiglass, the plexi works good.

Like Ethan said plexi would work much better so you can drill holes, you want to get some ventilation in there otherwise the stale air will harbor lots of bacteria and eventually cause difficulty breathing. You want to make sure to somehow be able to secure it so the snake cant get out... personally I'd just buy a rubbermaid, there much easier and would probably cost about the same as a piece of plexiglass.

i work at a pet store and as much as i'd like to tell people to go out and buy rubbermaid containers, being that i'm not selling them something of ours, it doest work out too well. so the way that we do it is this: say you have a 20 long or even a 10 gallon tank with a locking screen top. most aquarium companies make glass tops for fish tanks, and All Glass Aquariums in particular makes theirs with a plastic edge that is seperate ( so that there's some play to put cords thru and leave space for filters on the lip). what we do is put the glass top down minus the plastic strip (the strip is about 2 inches, and runs the length of the tank) put the screen top on over that (the glass top sets in the rim) and then to increase air circulation run a piece of airline tubing thru that's connected to an airstone. it doesnt really blow the air, but at least its a constant supply of fresh air. seems kind of elaborate i know, and the drawback is that you can't really heat from above because the glass will crack, but it's a way to make it work if you want to do a nice naturalistic setup in a glass aquarium. if anyone has questions or comments let me know, if there's a better way to do this to make it easier for the customer it'd be good to know. the other two posts also both make very good points, and like they said, the biggest thing is just to make sure the glass doesnt completely seal off the top of the tank.

Hey,
Years ago, I kept a hot snake, Black tail rattler, and the way around the problem, I found, was to fasten a piece of plexiglass underneathe the screen lid. Take a measurement of the underside of the screen, and reduce the measurement both from the width and length, by about an 1/8th of an inch. Drill some holes with a brad point drill bit, about 1/8" to 1/4" bit. Apply a thin 1/4" bead of hot glue with a hot glue gun underneath the full rectangular length and width of the lid and press the measured plexiglass down onto the underside of the lid firmly and allow to set for a few hours.

You can also use, clear sillicone rubber, by using a thin bead around the periphery of the underside of the screened lid too. Be sure to allow ample time to set and dry. This works great and will last for a while. I've never had one come apart if done properly.
