Need advice on newly rescued anole

llapree Mar 22, 2004 06:14 PM

Yesterday afternoon an anole found me by running up and sitting on my foot. It crawled into my hand, and on further inspection, I realized part of it's tail had been broken off(which I know is ok) and it's two back feet were black and about to fall off. Since it couldn't really get around, I brought it inside and put it in a tank I already had with a heat lamp. At night it stays nice and green, but during the day it turns dark brown unless I'm holding it (when I put my hand in the tank to give it fresh water, it climbs right up my arm). I've tried to get it to eat some baby crickets, but it won't touch them. Today I noticed that it seems to be molting. Should I just let it go and let nature take it's course, or is there something else I can do for it? I'm afraid that it would be easy pickings for the kitty or whatever that got it the first time. It's all by itself in a quiet room and the temp has been staying between 65-75. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would try to help it out.And every thing sounds good except the temp should be 85-90.It doesn't eat i would get a small mealworm and make the anole open it mouth and drop it it in.

I am glad there are people like you who help out these little lizards.People don't seem to care for these guy anymore.

Thanks. Should I just lightly use the tip of my fingernail to open it's mouth? I don't want to hurt it anymore than it's already been hurt. And I forgot to ask earlier-will the feet grow back like the tail? Thanks again.

The feet will not grow back on your anole. But did you know some salamanders can regrow parts of there heads and can regrow there limbs(pretty neat).Usally if you tap the anoles mouth it will open it mouth.

Good Luck!

Best case scenario is that it' not feeding while in molt...they often don't.

I think that it's a bad sign that the critter is allowing you to handle him like that. Seems severly stressed and ill to me. Force feeding might be the final straw in terms of stress. Sounds like he suffered some trauma.

Get the humidity up high during its molt. Provide sufficient heat and get some UVB light on the little critter.

Likely he/she won't make it, but it's worth a try. I'm just not sure if force feeding wouldn't make the situation worse.
