Frasier the star

iwana Mar 22, 2004 07:10 PM

Hi everyone,

Just thought I'd share this link that leads to our photo album. We were invited to a home and garden show for the second year in a row to display some of our animals, including Frasier our veiled chameleon. He's always such a hit, too!

The first year I brought him, I was worried that it would stress him out, but he actually seems to enjoy the attention. This year, I brought silkies with me and even when there were about 10 kids circled around his display cage, he would enthousiastically nab a worm -- always made the kids giggle. LOL

Anyway, hope you enjoy the pics!

Hey Julie - that was cool! it is neat to see so many young folks (esp. the girls) be so comfortable and intrigued by the herps! I would never have thought of including herps in a Home & Garden show! We have a big one in Durham (NH) and cham's are not there. How did you get hooked up with this in the first place? Does Traveling Wonders go to schools and stuff? You being in VT makes this interesting for me.

Hi Lele!

It's kinda funny how we got invited to that show... Last year, the Vermont Entomology Society (or something like that) was supposed to host a table and cancelled at the last minute; the show is hosted by the Rotary Club and the president ended up getting in touch with my husband, Justin, through someone who knew someone who knew Justin, and asked him if he would mind bringing a few critters. So we ended up doing it, but at the time, it was for VHSO (Vermont Herpetological Society Online).

Just this year, we decided to create Traveling Wonders to help bring in extra income and to be able to make ourselves more accessible. Moreover, there are no programs like these offered in Vermont and there is seemingly a very big demand for it; we've done a few shows (two for a summer camp, two for the home and garden show and a few for herp societies) and we never ceased to be amazed at people's reactions. One man was just about thrilled to tears because we gave him the opportunity to hold Frasier, a critter we feel is common and pretty much take for granted. Another funny thing we've noticed is that most of the people who show a marked interest in the herps are girls.

So to answer your question, Traveling Wonders does go to schools, summer camps, etc. There's actually a company in New Hampshire that does shows -- New England Reptile Distributors (NERD) does a "crocodile hunter" like show that looks pretty cool. I think they only do parties, though.

We actually have a web site that details what Traveling Wonders is about; the photo album doesn't link back to it (yet), so I've included the link to the home page, below.

Julie, isn't it interesting how connections happen?! I know about NERD but I also know that they sort of focus on snakes. haven't been there yet (they're about 1/2 hour or so from me) but had called them when I was first looking for chams last year.

As for other places for you to make Traveling Wonders avaialble are home-school programs. Hone Schooloing is HUGE in NH and my guess is that VT has a solid community as well - just a thought.

When you do them at schools the schools pay you? I ask because I had been doing my Giant Silk Moth presentation as a volunteer (as a favor to a few sixth graders!) but have wanted to do that, and my new Backyard Pollinator program (Audubon this summer ), at schools but figured they wouldn't pay - or at least not much ;-/

I'll check out your site. thanks!
