Scroll down the page and you see 3 other threads (more if you go back further) asking about the same question. You're sure to get some ideas/answers there.

What are your requirements (snake size, cage size, etc)?

Not sure if you mean 40 gallon breeder (36"x18"x12" or 40 gallon long (48" x 12" x 16", but I'd suggest:

Cornsnake (like a bit of climbing, lots of great colors/patterns)
Kenyan Sand Boa (like to burrow a lot)
Rosy Boa
California Kingsnake (great feeders)

Just my opinion!

I realize you said under 2 feet for the snake, cornsnakes and kingsnakes get bigger than that but they would do fine in that size tank.

I'd also like to add: Western Hognose

Tigergenesis I am not that familiar with western hognose snakes but I know in genral hognoses eat frogs and can be hard to get eat. Not to start any thing but I feel they are not a good starter snake. I maybe wrong I often sick my foot in my mouth

nope - not exactly. more true of easterns. westerns are easier and will eat rodents. they are better beginners
