roaches for my savannahs

kap10cavy Mar 22, 2004 08:34 PM

Ok, before ya'll start on me, yes, I did check the past forums. Not alot of useful info. Does anyone here keep, and breed roaches for their monitors? How hard are they to keep for breeding and are they nutritious? Where is the best place to order them from without going broke lol. What do I keep them in so I don't have to call the bugman? I haven't had much luck breeding mice, and yes I got a male to go with the females. Just because I'm in Alabama doesn't mean I don't know it takes 2 to tango.lol

Thank You
Scott

Roaches are very good for your sav. I feed them to my young water and he gobbles them right up. As far as breeding them and a cage set up for them go over to the feeder food forum, they got all sorts of good stuff like that. Good luck

I breed various species of roaches for my varanids, and they have now eliminated my cricket feeding bill. While I do still feed crickets on occasion, I feel that roaches are of better nutrition, and they also get larger. For a full grown savannah, you would probably want to get into some of the larger species, who cannot climb glass, such as Blaberus discoidalis, Eublaberus prosticus, Blaptica dubia, and Blaberus cranifer. Although the non climbers do not reproduce as fast as lobster roaches, they will give you a huge colony in a few month's time. I think they are well worth the initial investment. I hope this helps a bit,

I get into the habit doing that. I apologize... The four species that would be a great choice for you, that are unable to climb glass, would be Discoid Roaches, Orange Spotted Roaches, Orange Head Roaches, and Death Head Roaches. While they take a bit longer to raise up than lobster roaches, they are of a bigger size and would be a heartier meal/s for a Sav than a lobster/s. I hope this helps, sorry for the confusion,
