burmking Mar 22, 2004 08:39 PM

I just took my brothers iguana off of him because he did not take care of it. IT only had a light for heat and i know they need special lighting as i know from other reptiles. What should i get for UVB and what brand and all that i would really appreciate the help.

You should make sure you maintain a basking spot of around 100-105 degrees and a cooler area at around 75-80. For UVB I suggest buying a ReptiSun 5.0 that can be purchased at pretty much any petstore. Make sure the UVB bulb is no farther than about 6 inches from a platform for him to bask under. Keep the humidity up as well. And feed those nutritious greens! Collards, Mustard, Turnip, Dandellion are all good greens. Veggies also needed. I use butternut squash, bell peppers, green beans. Have fun!

Good for you for saving the iguana. How long has it been kept like that? I would take it to the vet asap to have it checked out. Look in the Green Iguana Society website for some quick info.. That is where I got this info-"The two most highly recommended brands are ZooMed 5.0 iguana lights (also called Reptisun 5.0) and Durotest Vita-lite. Both provide large enough amounts of UV light to keep your iguana healthy. Durotest Vita-Lite bulbs can be purchased at Natural Lighting.com. Of the two brands, the ZooMed bulbs give off higher amounts of UV, and may be better for those who rely more heavily on artificial UV sources for their iguanas. Another new fluorescent bulb that may be used is the ReptiGlo 8.0 made by Exo Terra." Have the uvb light about 12"to 15" above his basking spot. The basking spot should be about 90 to 95 degrees F. Get a copy of Iguanas for dummies it's a great book with a lot of great info. Good luck.

Oh yeah. If you buy a flourencent bulb make sure you take the glass or plastic cover off from covering the bulb. The glass or plastic will filter out the uvb light. Don't ask me why they even put it on there knowing it filters the uvb light. It doesn't make sense.
