Is there anything in between garter and corn that Im missing..

leopfan Mar 22, 2004 09:52 PM

Read all the posts along with about 12 hours of websites over past week or so. Now its all running together in my mind. I really liked what I saw with a ghost corn and normal eastern garters. Now I cant decide what to do. Still a pretty good difference between those two. Is there anything in size, temperment etc thats grows in between size of garter and corn?
What size will the average garter grow to?

Thanks

the average garter is around 2 to 3 feet, some are even smaller. Corns can get up to 5 feet.

Some corns get up to 6 feet.

African house snakes are in the 3 foot range, and they're very easy keepers.

I have both an adult corn and an adult garter and have kept a number of specimens of both over the years. Both my corn and my garter are about the same size (4 feet). Corns are generally much less skiddish and much calmer. Garters seem to be generally more active than corns and don't take handling quite as well (plus there is the whole musking thing by the majority of new garters). One other thing to consider is that garters tend to eat alot and want to eat often. Thus, they tend to dirty up their enclosures much faster than corns do (more frequesnt cleaning is a definite necessity for garters).

Good info, I appreciate that. I hope you said how old they were, I'll go back and look, if not could you tell me your corn and garters ages.

Wow a garter 4' I would have never guessed. Is it a certain kind of garter? Ive done alot of reading on both.

What do you think about brazilain rosey boas? They were very interesting to me too. Seems like they need more attention.

I have a leopard gecko who was sick and that took ALOT of attention but hes eating well again, and now I have nothing to do anymore LOL

Thanks again

Are you talking about rosey boas or brazillian rainbow boas? I think you got a bit ahead of yourself lol.

Rainbows are rather unpredictable in their temperaments. Expect occasional bites and general attitude at times.

Also, brazilian rainbows require more humidity than a typical snake set up can provide. Their requirements are not typical. Otherwise, they are generally great feeders.

They do require a high humidity environment that can be hard to create in an aquarium type set up. They also have more specific temperature requirements. I currently have a pair of 2.5 year olds that are between 4 and 5 feet in length. One that has bitten me and one that hasn't (yet). They've got pretty long teeth for a small boa and will definitely leave a mark. They're somewhat shy, nocturnal snakes that prefer to stay hidden most of the time. Beautiful snakes- but not the easiest pet.

I've kept garters also and they are a more active snake if you like to watch them. Eat more, cruise the cage more, require more frequent cage cleaning. Most settle down after some handling- though they are a little squirmier than corns, other rat snakes and kings.
