Gekko polls and Qs

ingo Mar 23, 2004 01:52 AM

Dear all,

maybe you remember that I am writing a book about husbandry of Gekko (not Gecko) species.
Hence it is of interest to me, to know how many people do in fact regularily breed species of this genus.
So all you Gekko gecko, Gekko vittatus, Gekko monarchus, Gekko grossmanni, Gekko ulikovskii, Gekko siamensis, Gekko smithii, Gekko petricolus etc etc breeders tell me how many babies you have per year of which species and since then.
Sadly my impression so far is that with the exception of some tokay and white lined gecko breeders (plus some petricolus breeders in europe), there is hardly anybody out there who does regularily breed these animals.
Do all the thousands of G. grossmanni imports just die!
Please tell me that I ´m wrong!!!!

Also I would like to know whether the "patternless " (you only see very faint stripes in certain light situations) variant of Gekko vittatus is typical for a certain population (where do those come from???) or wether they occur in any G. vittatus population here and then.

And also: What do you think: Are the small (11-14 preanal pores; males max 9" and the large (14-18 preanal pores, Males >10"" G. grossmanni" the same species or are there two species traded under that name? Why do you think so???

Looking forward to replies

Ingo,

Right now I'm breeding tokays, have a single pair, no eggs as of yet
5 years ago I bred white-line, Had a total of ten babies. And also tried golden geckos (Gekko ulikovskii) didn't have any luck getting them to breed. Then had to stop keeping reptiles for awhile. Just didn't have the time.

With respect to the book:

So far it will be availale only in german and it will cover detailed information on husbandry and breeding of 8 Gekko species.
This includes personal experiences with seven species and an extract of information from a lot of primary literature and from herpers around the world.
If you show me that here is a need, I may try to convince my editor to think about an english version-he has already done that for a few books ....

I'd pay up to 40....maybe even 50 if it had some interesting photographs and info which has not been discussed before. Far too many books are starting to sound the same (eg. keep him at ___ temp and ____ humidity in a ____ gallon. males get ___ big females stay smaller...yada yada). Hopefully your book will have some facts that are trully interesting to read.

I promise: There will be a lot of NEW intersting Pics of at least 8 species including Macroshots to show a lot of details like toe pads, pores of both sexes for all species etc etc.
And I spend a lot of time on collecting specific information on each species.
Anyhow, I am still searching for more-hence its a pity, that there is no one in this forum who could comment on the breeding situation in the US.
Anyhow, I am quite convinced that the book will be different from those which deal with the genus today and that it will be of help to gekko keepers and breeders. Newbies and experienced guys.
Keep your fingers crossed that thats not just an empty promise...
And:I ´ll ask my editor for an english version..

Ingo, guess you know I keep and breed Tokays. Sorry I have no experience on the others. I currently have 1 male and 2 female breeders. Theyve been producing eggs monthly just about nonstop for about a year and a half. I have fresh eggs layed just a few days ago and 2-4 new hatchlings running about. I'm considering expanding my breeders since I'm doing very well with selling them now. I too would look foward to purchasing your book in english cause I consider your knowledge to be exceptional. I'm also considering getting out of my Leos and AFT's and working with a couple of these other species(white lined, goldens).
