Substrate Questions

mikemckenny Jun 12, 2003 07:02 AM

I have a pair of leo's and I've been using newspaper as their substrate because it makes cleaning easier and it's inexpensive.

However, I'ld like to make the tank more realistic, possibly do the vivarium thing.

What is a good substrate to use for a more realistic cage? What is a good source for that substrate?

I did some searching on the "big" dealer websites, but I can't find the sand substrate that I've heard of. Where does everyone find the right sand to use?

Thanks,
Mike

Well if you want to go natural and try to duplicate the habitat of Eublepharis macularius then you need to keep this in mind, the don't come form the desert, they come from montane regions scattered with large rocks and various species of grasses. As for substrate, why not try a couple pieces of cut slate? Slate would be easy to clean, attractive, and trouble free. It would be closer to duplicating their natural habitat then sand and it would remove any chance of impactation, why take the risk?

What is the soil composition in that region?

I personally use coral sand. Been using it for years and never had any problems with it.

I agree its not the natural substrate but its a good bedding to put rocks and slate on. I'm currently working on my viv.

If you want a natural substrate, go with sheets of slate rock. I personally am TOTALLY against using loose substrates due to the fact I almost lost my beloved first leo because I used sand...leos lick EVERYTHING and eventually it impacted him....not worth the risk to me. I use paper towels and I (or my geckos) couldn't be happier.

Try either slate or tile. I used slate like uncoated rough ceramic tile over about 1/4" sand as a base. It is super easy to clean and conducts heat very well. The tile also looks like natural rock surface and the leos don't mind it at all. Another bonus is that it is easy to find the worms and crickets - they can't burrow into it! RR
