For Angel/Gogogo51, about Red Head Dwarf

Claus_Rix Mar 23, 2004 10:44 AM

Hi Angel

You seem to know you way around short tails, so I have to ask you about that so-called “Red Head Dwarf race of the Sumatran Short-tails”, you’ve mentioned earlier.

Are these “Red heads” the same as what you earlier referred to as Orange heads (like those of mine, you identified for me awhile ago)?

If not, what are the differences?

I would really like to hear more about these Dwarf Red heads.

My own little critters

Thanks in advance

Hey,
As far as the red heads are concerned, there isn't a whole lot of data on them at the moment, so you might want to get intouch with Dave Barker, who is the only one that I know of actually harboring any of these lovely critters. I wouldn't mind a pair my self.

As for the locale, they are found apparently in some area north of Padang, and Pelambang to the west on the island of Sumatra, west of the Barisan mountains and inland from the coast. The location I would think is being kept a secret as there isn't much information getting out on these, but from what I can tell they seem to be very different from the usual red head or orange heads we are seeing coming in from the skin trade in Medan, and Lampung

Hey Claus,
Here is a reply that I received last night from Dave Barker on the subject of the Dwarf Red Heads:
"We do not know where the small orange-headed variety come from. Based on
what I know about the trade routes, it seems very possible that the
snakes come from south-southwest of Medan, on the Indian Ocean side of
Sumatra, from the area between the upper drainage of the Geumapang River
and inland of the town of Sibolga."
